2017 Season

Hello Lacrosse Families - we are finally getting close to the start of our season!  Watch your email over the next week or so for some more detailed information about our 2017 season, but I have one important date change to share with you today:

Our Open House will be held on Thursday, March 2, at 7pm at Gilead Hill School in Hebron (it had originally been scheduled for February 16).  Please note this date change.

We hope that everyone will join us.  We are planning some brief remarks about the program and some changes being made this year, and there will also be an opportunity to check out some new gear with our sponsor Dick's Sporting Goods (and you can grab your discount for the USLacrosse day at Dick's), Our US Lacrosse representative will be there, we'll have info about getting tickets for the Blackwolves game, and you can purchase our new-for-this-year RYL tshirts!

Hope to see you on March 2!  And keep wishing for an early spring so we can get onto the fields!

2017 Registration Information

Lacrosse families,

We are busy preparing for another great season of RHAM Youth Lacrosse (spring will be here before we know it!) and we have lots of news to share with you.  Please read below on each of the following important items:

  • RYL 2017 registration, now open!

  • US Lacrosse has announced changes to way that teams must be structured, read about our leagues’ plans, and our plans, to make this transition.

  • Girls’ optional headgear.

2017 Registration

2017 RYL registration fees follow:

Little Laxers (kindergarten): $50

Lightning (1st and 2nd grade): $100'

Grades 3-8:  $225

Financial aid is available; check our website or email the registrar for more information.  You can pay half of the fee now and the other half just before the season starts. Register by January 31 to guarantee your child a spot on the RYL roster and to avoid late fees!

US Lacrosse Age Segmentation Changes

As background, our Bantam, Junior and Senior boys play as a part of the Connecticut Valley Youth Lacrosse (CVYL)  league, and our girls play for the Connecticut Valley Girls Youth Lacrosse (CVGYL) league.   Both leagues are governed by US Lacrosse. Currently, US Lacrosse is in the process of making a change to the way that youth teams are structured, and so by 2018, all youth teams must shift into a “U” structure.  Read about these changes here: http://www.uslacrosse.org/players/player-segmentation

Our two leagues are in different stages of implementing these changes.  CVYL, the boys’ league, has implemented the U structure for this upcoming season, and is permitting lacrosse programs, like RYL, to play kids at their U-level, to play them up, or to submit a waiver so that they can play “down” with the teams they have played with before.  CVGYL, the girls’ league, has not yet announced how it will implement the U structure, but we expect that they will implement a similar approach.

The RYL goal is to assign each player to the team which is most appropriate for that player.  We have reviewed our players’ ages against the new U structures and find that `some of our players would be assigned to a team which is different from the age group he/she has played with in previous years, which is not what we want to see. Please understand that we will work closely with the coaches and with each child’s parents to determine the appropriate team placement.

To facilitate registration during this transitional year, we are registering players in grades 3-8 only by gender.

Girls’ Headgear

Beginning in 2017, youth and high school girls can wear optional headgear. RYL is not offering any opinion on the use of the optional headgear at this time, but our Safety Coordinator will continue monitoring this change and will provide updates as appropriate.  You can read  more about the US Lacrosse guidelines here:

http://www.uslacrosse.org/safety/equipment/womens-lacrosse-headgear-faq.  The New York Times has also covered this subject, you can read more here: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/30/sports/girls-lacrosse-headgear-concussions.html?_r=0

Volunteer Opportunities

If you love youth lacrosse as much as we do, please consider helping us to make RYL the best youth lacrosse program around.  We are seeking board members and people to help us to run various aspects of the program.  Many of our current board members and other volunteers have kids who have moved into the high school and are no longer playing in our program and so we need additional lacrosse parents to help.  Please reply to this note, or contact any member of the Board to find out how you can help.

We are excited for another great RHAM Youth Lacrosse season in 2017 and look forward to seeing all of you on our beautiful Burnt Hill fields!   Please reach out to any  member of our Board if you have any questions.
